Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that typically affects the face, characterised by redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes acne-like bumps. It can vary in intensity and may flare up for a period of weeks to months before diminishing. While the exact cause of rosacea is unknown, it can be triggered by various factors, including sun exposure, extreme temperatures, certain foods and drinks, stress, and certain medications.
Rosacea commonly presents in four types:
- Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea: Characterised by flushing and persistent redness with visible blood vessels.
- Papulopustular Rosacea: Similar to acne, it includes redness with swelling and acne-like breakouts.
- Phymatous Rosacea: Involves skin thickening and a bumpy texture, often on the nose.
- Ocular Rosacea: Affects the eye area, causing red and irritated eyes and swollen eyelids.
